Introduction

This study adopted a pretest and posttest quasi-experiment design mode involving experiment method and investigation method. The data analysis applied both quantitative methods and qualitative methods. Firstly, an AI English Reading textbook was compiled and published. Secondly, with a triune CSL teaching model, a general English course – AI English Reading – was designed and taught to one class of 45 students in Chongqing Technology and Business University (CTBU). Thirdly, before the course began, students were tested with an English proficiency test on AI general knowledge and English reading ability, and a student survey of a questionnaire and a one-to-one semi-structured interview before the course, and one more English proficiency test on AI general knowledge and English reading ability, and one more student survey of a questionnaire and two interviews at the end of the course. Finally, all the quantitative data collected were analyzed by computer programs and all the qualitative data collected were analyzed by thematic analysis. Following a product-perception evaluation model, the data results were discussed to evaluate the effectiveness of this AI English Reading course and students' perceptions to the course.

The research findings revealed that after taking the AI English Reading course, students' AI general knowledge and English reading ability were both improved. Students' systematic content schemas of AI general knowledge was constructed, and they improved their understanding of AI conceptual problems and AI jargons. Students' reading ability was enhanced especially their reading speed, and the inferential ability, but least improvement in their summarizing and commenting ability. Students generally held a positive attitude to the AI English Reading course and to the improvement of their AI general knowledge and English Reading ability, and provided many constructive suggestions on the improvement, development and perfection of AI English. English for AI purpose whether in GEE, ESP or EAP is a theme that needs to be further explored.
